Stonewall invites you to a dramatic reading of the critically-acclaimed play, As Is, to mark the 30th anniversary of its first production. A pioneer of gay theater, William M. Hoffman began writing the play in 1982, early in the AIDS crisis. Originally staged by New York's Circle Repertory Company in 1985, As Is was the first Broadway play to represent the disease. Noteworthy not only for its gritty depiction of the fear, uncertainty and horror of the time, the love story of As Is ultimately offers a sex-positive and hopeful message for its audience. At a time in history when great progress has been made for some, but huge challenges remain on a global scale, this reading provides the opportunity to honor the past, remain vigilant in the present and provide a cathartic and educational experience as we look toward an AIDS-free future.
